Do you know who Bobby Layne is? No? Come here the tail of a man who once ran in 4 touchdowns, passed for 2 more, and oh yeah, kicked 3 field goals in the same game. Who would ever trade him away, especially if he then issued a 50 year curse? We got it all this week, including Cleveland Browns NFL championships. We’re back to our usual stops in the Mailroom and Office of Moral Victories, all brought to you by Ruddf- sorry, Fuddruckers? Maybe?

Misery Sports Co. Episode 34 Transcript

Welcome to Misery Sports Co. If your team has sold you a bag of bull in the preseason, you are welcome here. I’m Zach and I’m Trevor and I. I buy it every year. Zach every year I show up and I buy it. They wouldn’t sell it if we stopped buying it. But I’m here. I got my money. Take it. This bag stinks. Is it the same? Is it the same thing? Is it. No, no. Just. Just open it. Yeah. Just maybe. Maybe it’s great in there. We don’t know until you buy it and see. It might be good. I don’t know. Well, we are returning to our normal structure, so we will dive into the weekly performance review. Hit the mail room. We’re going to go back to the Office of Moral Victories before Trevor’s deep dive. But before we go into the weekly performance review, Trevor, who is our first sponsor. The next segment of the Misery Sports podcast is brought to you by that one giant kid on every Little League World Series team. How come every team is a bunch of ten year olds and then one six foot Bryce Harper looking kid, and he always be hitting home runs and he’s a closer. We’re just not going to say anything. We’re just we’re all good with this. It’s fine. Whatever. Live your life with that one giant kid in every Little League World Series team. Thank you to that giant kid. That giant kid won me a championship in second grade. Machine pitched soccer, softball, baseball. He went yard every. Yeah. Machine pitch. First time I’ve ever played baseball, right? I didn’t do T-ball. I didn’t do coach pitch. They were like, here you go. Here’s machine. Like, what the hell is that in this dude? Of course we were the Dodgers, which looking back, we were stacked. Uh, and it was just this guy. You just. If you got on base, it was a homer every time. Dang. Just say you’re stroking it. Gone. Every time we had one to. When I played for the City League in high school and this kid would just like, I swear he wasn’t there for ninety percent of the games he showed up for. Like the last couple got us to the championship and would just get up to the plate and stroke it like it was. It was no big deal. We’re like, what is your name? How do you do this? He’s like, nah, you guys could do it. Just choke up on the bat. Like, no, you’re just crushing it. And I turned on the Little League World Series, all these teams, it’s the same setup. They got one giant kid. They were intentionally walking him the other night. It was crazy, crazy stuff. Yeah. Let him live. Let him live. Well, thank you so much for the the sponsorship bucks. And we will now go to the weekly performance review here at Misery Sports Co. We take a look across the landscape of sports. It could be some of our teams. We have many teams here at Misery Sports Co that would fit that profile. We may even cover some of the teams that we’ve covered in our deep dives here at Misery Sports Co. Trevor, who do you have this week? Well, it is preseason time and I have a lot of thoughts from the preseason, but I don’t. I find myself I’m bored with my own thoughts about the preseason because it’s a preseason. Like who cares, right? Like, let’s get to the games. They’re like you said at the top, they’re selling us bull. I’m still buying it. I’m mad at myself for buying it. Like, what’s the point? Uh, so I won’t get too bogged down. Um, first, it is important that we stop down for a little bit of a. I just want to know our weekly check. Let’s go. Yeah. Uh, and I’m proud to report, uh, and happy to report that yes, he is, uh, he is healthy. So yay. Carnell Tate staying healthy. Did he do great in the first preseason game? No. But that’s okay. He got some cardio in. I don’t think he had a catch. I think he had one target. Uh, I want to I want to highlight a ninety six yard touchdown drive to open the preseason game with our ones. Now, was it against the other teams twos and threes? Yes it was. Okay. Big big effing deal. Congrats, Niners. Whatever. You’re great. But dang it, we drove down ninety six yards. Uh, a lot of runs, which is nice. And then cam had two really bad drives, and Titans Nation freaked the crap out. Uh, I don’t know, man. He bounced back in practice, but who cares? Well, I’m not getting freaked out. It’s preseason time, right? Who cares? It’s preseason. Yeah, yeah, it’s jump on the hype train. Yeah, I did see I forget which sports book it was, but they released Super Bowl odds and usually staple of MSC. We just want to see Zero point zero one percent. Get us on the board. Give me that little hope. But, Zach, this year, this sports book. I have to look up which one it was. We didn’t even get that zero point oh one percent. They just said zero point zero zero. So like, it’s just not going to happen. So okay, fine. You can’t even give me that one hundredth of a percent to lock on to whatever. I don’t care. It’s fine. Um, I did want to check in with the previous owner here at MSC. Uh, we’ve covered the Seattle Mariners who you checked in on, uh, last episode. Um, I am here to tell you that they lost to the Milwaukee Brewers twenty two to zero. That is a baseball game. Just want to remind everybody we’re talking about Major League Baseball. And the final score was twenty two to zero. They let in nine runs in the eighth inning where they had position players pitching for them, which at that point, that’s my favorite part. That’s my favorite. Such a great part when they start throwing those rainbows. Yes, yes. It’s so good. And sometimes it’s just like, can those guys just ground out? You know, like it’s twenty. It’s such a weird place because you it counts for the stats. So like, I would want to get a free hit, but they should just call it at some point. Well, the thing is, they also want free hits because they were cranking them out of the ballpark. Okay. They didn’t let up at all. And I mean, nine runs in the in the eighth. It was pretty rough. But that’s disrespectful. That’s what I’m saying. It was already thirteen to zero sack. And they were like, golly, time to crank on this. Uh, which they did. The Mariners only two and a half games back of the wild card. Uh, but hey, a twenty two zero loss definitely belongs at MSK. Zach, what do you got this week? Oh, well, I still hate Deshaun Watson. Um he will be my quarterback. So you know what Trevor I just want a freaking win a football game at this point. And so they’re going to trot Deshaun out. Um he was okay in the preseason game. He went I don’t know. It was like nine for eleven to start out. We got crushed or we just have no depth toward the end of it. Uh, we lost to the bears. Um, we got the bills. So we’re doing a lot of preseason practices, drills, whatever it feels like more any more now, the practices are more important than the actual game. Like the, the number ones play each other quite a bit. Yep. Um we’ll see. Trevor. I don’t I don’t know. I don’t care, I just want to win a game. The person that I am going to really highlight for the Cleveland Browns is their third string quarterback. His name is Taylen Green. He might be fourth string with Dillon Gabriel. I was going to say, oh, no. Dillon! Gabriel. Get him out. He doesn’t even need to be here. Oh, Taylen Green is a quarterback from Arkansas who he drafted. I mean, it was like fifth or sixth round pick up, six foot six ra s, which is like their athletic score nine point nine nine out of ten. He is the. Now we’re talking second ranked QB ever from an athletic perspective, Trevor. At this point, I’m fine with just writing this dude. We’re going to get the number one pick. Either way, it doesn’t matter. Let’s just see what this guy’s got because Deshaun is not good. He is still grounding balls every fourth or fifth pass. Uh, and Dr. Sanders just. Isn’t it? I mean, I was hoping that maybe he would. His honestly, his attitude isn’t terrible. Yeah. Is, you know, the sideshow is a distraction, but. Sure. Um, we will see. Moving on from the Browns. We got, uh, we got a lot of weeks to talk about the Browns. Hold a funeral in a few weeks. No we’re not. No we’re not. You’re not gonna bury the Browns in week three on me. It’s not happening. Cavs made a trade, so they made a trade for Peyton Watson with the Denver Nuggets. Trevor, when I say that we do not have a wing player above six foot six. That is a truth. Dean Wade went to the seventy six ers to play with LeBron James. D Wade LeBron James now back together. Yep. Peyton Watson six foot eight shooter. Love it. It’s going to be the the ray of sunshine. Mhm. I cannot watch this team though. Trevor so f the m b a for putting them on. Guess what. We open with the Philadelphia seventy six ers. They were like oh we’ll throw the Cavs a bone. You get the seventy six ers. Yeah national game against LeBron James. And then there’s nothing I mean nothing. This team went to the Eastern Conference finals. We have four all Stars on the team. We get nothing. Uh whatever Ohio State looks good won’t cover them. That’s kind of the the ray of sunshine the the tether right for our craziness. And actually my other, my other note was also the Brewers. So RIP to the Mariners getting beat by twenty two. Um, that is tied for the largest shutout in the modern era. It is Wolf. That’s tough. That’s rough. That’s tough. Yeah. Uh, a quick note, when you said with the Cleveland Browns that you just want them to win a freaking football game, I did think that that was going to be your wish with our fifty fifty scratchers last week and you went. You went bold and said, I want a playoff win soul for the playoffs. I couldn’t even they rejected me. I was like, let’s just focus on a win, buddy. Yeah. No, that was that was the right call. That was the right call. All right. Well, that concludes the weekly performance review. Before we jump into the mail room, we have our next sponsorship. Let me get some audio going here. Crap is a crap organization and we might get copyrighted for this episode, and it might not air, but we’re gonna keep trudging. Tuesdays on TLC. It deserves a higher spot. TLC put it in the Saturday night. It’s disrespectful. Don’t go chasing waterfalls, Trevor. All right? You’ve never heard of that? You’re completely unaware. Nobody says that. Nobody says. Nobody says that. Welcome to the mail room. Uh, it’s a combination of AI and a summer intern who has. Well overstayed their welcome. I mean, it is. School has started, so get out. Intern. Okay. It’s leave. We’re not paying you. Right. That’s a thing. There’s there’s been no money exchanged. Why are you here? Absolutely not. Uh, for the experience, the XP. Trevor, as the kids say. No, cap, let’s jump into the mail room. Uh, we go, we go across the Twittersphere. Trevor, what do you got this week? So I have three entries for you. First runner up. Excuse me. Second runner up is from Ellen Briggs, who highlights a study that Nielsen, the ratings folks. They released their first ever NFL Fandom Index, which ranks how avid NFL fans are in each team’s market based on eight key metrics. They look at apparel purchases, event attendance, streaming, general interest, social media, following betting, all this stuff, right? And then they say, who has the top local fans for this index? I’m here to tell you. You ready for this? That our teams our markets were not last. All right. Okay. All right. In fact, we weren’t even really that low at all. So finishing at number Fifteen is Nashville. So like middle of the pack. Now Nashville is. Oh, let’s go give it up for him. Come on there. You know, I’m not saying that this shows that Titans fans are super interested, but at least the fans in Nashville are very interested. They lumped acronym with Cleveland. And guess what? The Cleveland Akron market cracked the top ten at number ten. Let’s go, let’s go. So you know what in your face people you clown and laugh at all of us. But gosh darn it, we’re just as passionate as the rest of you. Okay? We’re clearly not as passionate as number one Buffalo. Which. What else do they have going on, really? But we’re pretty passionate. That’s right. First runner up. Uh, this is from Anders at Anders m k e on Twitter. Zach, are you familiar with the very cheap beer that comes in green bottles called rolling Rock? Yes. Funny story. There’s a pub next to me that offers cheap beer on, like a Monday. And Rolling Rock is one of them. Dollar baby. Yes. It it’s perfect for a dollar. That’s where it lives. Um. All right, Anders says. Ordered a rolling rock at the bar by saying, pass me the rock. And the bartender said, verbatim, shut the up. Proper response. Yep. That was great. Hey, pass me the rock. Hey, how about you shut the up? All right. My winner this week was from at Schwab’s. I’ll get through this. Who said? Who said? Coworker just tripped and smashed his coffee mug into the printer and said, that’s baseball. That’s. Okay. They’re on their knees with a broken mug and just turn around. That’s baseball. Baseball. That’s showbiz. Yep. Oh, man. All right. So congrats to Schwab’s. Although it’s a very close, close one from Anders. Oh. Too funny. What do you got, Zach? Mine just turned to really strange, so I just kept getting all of these tweets flooded into my feed around college football players and not going to class. So from Bussin with the boys. love the boys. Lenora Sellers, he’s a, I don’t know, probably like a top five, top ten quarterback for the South Carolina Gamecocks. Mhm. Uh. Talented dude. He graduated last December. He has no classes this semester. Just an internship at a local driving range. Nice. Yeah. Nice. Well done. Um, if you can line it up. That’s perfect. I did not use the driving range enough at the school we went to, and I regret it. I do too. It was right there. We could have used it whenever we wanted. I regret it. Um, and this is the new quarterback, I believe, of Penn State, Rocco Beck talking about his fall semester. I’ll have a class that I’m in, uh, online. And so after that, I’ll get a certificate and then I’m able to pursue to my master’s with, uh, those twelve credits. So you’ve won, you’ve won class this fall. And what? What’s what is it? I don’t know yet. We haven’t picked it yet, so, uh, we gotta do that here, uh, coming up this this weekend for school to start next week. But. Yeah, so I’m in one class. Um, I guess it’s the promise of being graduated being a fifth year. So is it, is that how it works? Trevor? What are we doing? There’s now a rule. I, I, I read a ruling from a federal court that players in the NFL can now come back to college. So they’re literally players who are practice squad, you know, aren’t going to make the fifty three and they’re going back to school. This is nuts. So it’s so broken. The whole thing’s broken. Makes absolutely no sense. All right. Well let’s jump into well, actually, before we jump into the office of Moral Victories, Trevor, who is our next sponsor, do you struggle with humility a little too proud and your friends have started to make comments. Well, now you too can learn inner peace and the humility channeled by future Hall of Famer Von Miller with his online pride killing classes. Just listen to how down to earth and relatable von is when it comes to being a great teammate. Like if it was a Hall of Fame for that, like I’m going in the Hall of Fame first ballot. To be honest, it’s not. I’m probably the best teammate that ever played in the National Football League. And I and I say that with all confidence in the world. Um that’s right. He’s the greatest to ever do it, but he’ll never brag about it. Call today for Von Miller’s pride killer. He the goat. He the goat. He said it himself. He’s the greatest teammate to ever do it. That’s humility if I’ve ever seen it. Trevor. That’s right. I mean, to go up there and admit it. Yes. You have to humble yourself and then be so secure in that humility that you tell everybody on a national stage. Yeah. Sometimes people just shouldn’t have a microphone. I think that’s, uh, that’s the conclusion here, Trevor. Sometimes we just don’t need to hear it. Been there, been there, been told that by loved ones. I get it. That’s our whole show, basically. Yeah. What do you think this is? What do you think? We’re running here? All right. Welcome to the Office of Moral Victories. In this segment, we hand out employees of the week taking a look across different sports leagues. Trevor who do you got this week? So it’s been a hot minute since we’ve been here. Last time it was Houston Rockets point guard Bruce Thornton. We love Bruce. We’re big. We’re big Bruce guys. Uh all time Ohio State leading scorer. Uh, this week we’re going to stay in the association and we are going to say happy trails to Russell Westbrook, who announced his retirement. The future Hall of Famer has put up some crazy numbers over the years. I have had a weird relationship with Russell Westbrook. I would say I’m fifty fifty half the time I cannot stand him and half the time I think he’s great. The Thunder era Russell Westbrook was the best. Absolutely loved him. Loved that team uh was great. When he has popped up over the years I you know regardless of how I feel about him though, he has put up incredible numbers in his time in the NBA. He is the all time leader with two hundred triple regular season triple doubles with two hundred and nine. When you include the postseason, he’s up to two hundred and twenty one. He accounts for four of the seven seasons in NBA history, where a player has averaged a triple double. His twenty twenty twenty twenty one season with the Wizards, he played for the Wizards. What was the only season in NBA history where a player averaged at least eleven point five rebounds in eleven and a half assists per game. Uh, and he is one of three players in NBA history joining Oscar Robertson and Luka Doncic. Kill me to have averaged at least twenty points, six rebounds and eight assists over their careers. So absolutely ridiculous numbers for Russell Westbrook, the MVP and future Hall of Famer. Congrats. Happy trails. And I gotta say, I like this version of retiring and not having the long farewell tour where it’s look at me, all this stuff and I’m glad he’s going out like this. The video was cool that he released, so he is my employee of the week. Shout out to Russell Westbrook. Um, Misery Sports Co Thai. So his last season last year he was with the Sacramento Kings, who we’ve covered in this show. Sure have. Um, God bless him for going through that. Absolutely. Pound for pound, Trevor, I would argue he is one of the most athletic NBA players I’ve ever seen in my life. Um, I would put him up there with LeBron James. Derrick Rose in his prime. Absolutely incredible. He could just he could jump over anyone. Yes. Crazy. Yes. Yep. I’ve been victim. The Mavericks have been victim to many a game where he would just get the ball at the top of the key and just drive like he just put his head down and. And then he was at the basket, and there was nothing you could do about it. Yeah. No shooting. Just gonna dunk over. You know, if he pulls up, you’re like, okay, good. This is a win. This is a win. Yep. Oh my employee of the week. This week I actually have two this week. Um so James Harden is the first with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Shout out to James Harden. He actually stayed unsigned, so he opted out of his deal with the Cavaliers and let them pursue LeBron pursue other wings. And it eventually ended up with Peyton Watson. Um then James Harden got signed to a three year I think it was like ninety seven million dollar deal with the Cavaliers. Don’t love that. But shout out to James Harden. He uh he was doing a solid for the Cavs. Good for him. The second one I have is actually near and dear to your heart Trevor. It is none other than Pete Crow-armstrong of the Chicago Cubs. Dude is killing it right now man. Everything I’m seeing he’s in the MVP conversation versus Shohei Ohtani. And, uh, just based on the player surveys that they’ve taken, the players actually are favoring PCA right now. Yeah. Shohei hasn’t played since late June. He’s been hurt. So, uh. Or he hasn’t fielded. I guess maybe he’s hit, but yeah, Pca’s been crushing it now. He did float a weird conspiracy theory that Babe Ruth never actually existed. He floated that on a podcast. I don’t love that. I don’t love that. It’s it’s the dumbest conspiracy theory of all time. Trevor, you’ve got Kyrie Irving talking flat earth for the Mavs. Now you got PC a like what is going on. I need PCA to hit that. It’s going to take a while. Because when Kyrie showed up in Dallas we all thought it was going to go terribly. But he hit that random maturity. And I need that for PCA. I need it, I need it. But shout out oh man. Yeah absolutely. He’s on a tear. We’ll see what happens for the uh the NL MVP race. Love it. Before we jump into Trevor’s deep dive we have our final sponsor. Do you want a disgusting, barely edible hamburger with some incredibly greasy fries? Then look no further than Rudd. That’s right, Rudd burgers, where every burger is cooked until it’s somehow both burnt and raw. Every bun is slightly damp and our fries come pre-soaked in enough grease to require a separate napkin for each individual fry. Enjoy our famous toppings bar featuring wilted lettuce, room temperature tomatoes and a mysterious white sauce were legally not allowed to identify. And don’t worry about leaving hungry. Our burgers have enough sodium to keep you hydrated for approximately four minutes. Trevor did they mean fuddruckers? They may. They may have. It did. It did sound like my experience at Fuddruckers back in the day, so. Maybe they did. That’s on them, though. If they pass. Common mistake, common mistake. It happens all the time. Oh, man. It, uh, it doesn’t quite hit the same unless you were to, like, squint and look up pensively and then just kind of with a question, say. Uh, anyone can mix it up. Anyone can mix. It can happen to anybody. That’s right. Oh, well, thank you for your sponsorship dollars. We are now going to jump into the deep dive. So most weeks we take a look at a sports team that we haven’t covered before. Trevor who do you have this week? There is a team, Zach, that I think would have a serious case for being on the MSC Mount Rushmore. If we were limiting it to just North American sports, and we haven’t even talked about them, and I couldn’t believe it. I looked over it. Total oversight on our part, but I am here to make it right. This week I am, of course, talking about the Detroit Lions, who now they have had a, um, a long, storied journey of misery. Right. It’s it’s long. I can’t cover everything today. I am but one man in a subsegment of a very little listened to podcast. So I can’t do everything. Um, but I am here to talk about one important angle that I had no idea about. Uh, continuing on my theme from last time when we talked, uh, County Mayo. I am here to tell you feel it in my bones Curses are evil. Curses are real. Okay. You know it. I know it. And I’m here to talk about it. I’m here to talk to you about Bobby Lane. I’ve never heard of Bobby Lane before. I don’t know why I would have. Have you heard of Bobby Lane by chance? I have not. Okay. So Bobby Lane was quarterback, a quarterback who went to the University of Texas in nineteen forty four. Probably why we haven’t heard of him. I’m not super familiar with quarterbacks from the World War II era. Uh, and he, because of some new rules, because it was war time, freshmen weren’t allowed to, like play college football. Um, except in certain conferences. And he happened to be in a conference where he could the rule that freshmen could play football wasn’t universally changed until nineteen seventy two. It was just kind of on a conference by conference basis. I had no idea. All right. Let me tell you about Bobby Lane. This dude might be the goat, and we’ve never talked about him. During his sophomore year in the Cotton Bowl, Texas beat Mizzou forty to twenty seven. In that game, he completed eleven of twelve passes and accounted for every single one of the team’s forty points because he scored four touchdowns himself. He ran in or he threw for two other touchdowns, and then he kicked four field goals. Oh my word. Bobby Lane just doing everything out there. That was in his sophomore year. So great quarterback set records that apparently lasted into like the twenty first century. He gets drafted by the bears a few years later, he ends up with the Lions, and he just does work with his buddy Doak Walker. Uh, we’re going to briefly take a trip into the Twilight Zone. Bizarro world for a second. In nineteen fifty two, he leads the Lions to their first NFL championship in seventeen years. So we’re back in a time where the Lions are winning championships. Okay. He does it again the next year in fifty three. Back to they go back to back. All right. Bobby Layne is a baller. They fall short of a three peat in nineteen fifty four when they get dummied by the Cleveland Browns in the championship game fifty six to ten. So how about that. The Browns go. No. The bottle’s. This bottle popping time. Uh, fifty six to ten. They just destroyed him. Um, Bobby Layne did have an excuse. He said that the night before he slept too much. So too much coke. Too many women. Again, the note I have is just that he slept too much. That may be code for too many women and too much. And Jordan had the flu. Trevor, right. He did. He ate the pizza. Okay. In night. Okay, so that takes us through fifty three fifty seven. There’s only twelve games in the season. In game eleven, there’s a pile up. And yeah, he broke his leg in three places. Can happen to anybody. Nothing a little coke and ladies won’t fix. Okay. Uh, his replacement, Tobin Rote, these are real names wrote. I’m not making this up. Tobin rote finishes the season. Uh, Sam Gamgee, is he going to see, like, Mountain Dew? Middle earth? I’ll give you that. Tobin. Rote. Um. Um, but Tobin Rote steps in and is like, Bobby Lane. Time is over. All right, it’s it’s time madness over. It’s the season of rote, and y’all gotta get on board because they go to the championship and they return the favor by routing the Cleveland Browns. Wow. Fifty nine to fourteen. And everybody’s like, oh, it’s rote time. Let’s go. All aboard the rote train. So lions are in a weird place, right? Uh, we got Bobby Lane, who’s pretty good, but his legs pretty broken. And then we have Tobin Rote. Tobin rote stepped in and let us do a championship over the hated Browns. So, uh, we’re in a tough way. So, uh, that’s when it comes in. Of course, there’s always the curse of Bobby Layne, because in nineteen fifty eight, the Detroit Lions trade Bobby Layne to the Pittsburgh Steelers. And Bobby Layne responds, now what? We should pause. The last curse that we talked about with County Mayo was way out of pocket because that involved a priest coming out. It was a it was full send, dude. It was full send. You’re not gonna win until you’re all dead. All right. Mhm. Bobby Layne did not wake up and choose violence. He had a more gracious route. He just said the lions are not going to win. Uh, for the next fifty years, which, you know, people might outlive that. Okay. That’s fine. Um. So we got fifty years to play with. Is that disputed? Sure, but that’s the best part of all. Curses. We don’t know what’s what. In the fifty years after the trade, the Lions did not do well. They accumulated the worst winning percentage of any team in the NFL at that time. And they are still they’re still one of only two franchises that were in the NFL prior to nineteen sixty six that have not yet played in the Super Bowl. Uh, our listeners, if you’re listening closely, you’ll know that the other team is indeed the Cleveland Browns. Do it. Trevor. Uh, um, yeah, it’s fine, but just focus on the championships in the fifties, I think is, is the takeaway from this. Um, so in that fifty years, bad, bad, bad, uh, the Lions lone playoff win prior to twenty three twenty four came against the Dallas Cowboys in ninety one. So when the Pittsburgh Steelers won their fifth Super Bowl championship in two thousand and six, they won it at, you guessed it, Ford Field, where the Lions currently play football. Two years later, in the last year of the supposed curse, the Steelers won their sixth Super Bowl championship and the Lions finished zero and sixteen. After the twenty three twenty four season. Uh, Lions win a wild card spot. Congrats whatever. Blah blah blah blah blah. Uh, there’s fun little notes about people who have sat down and tried to do like, numerology with this. Um. Uh, they make it that year to the NFC championship game, right? Lions were going to the Super Bowl at halftime. They had a twenty four seven lead. But as we know, and the forty Niners rallied to tie the game in the third quarter, helped by a turnover on downs at the forty Niners twenty eight yard line and a crucial fumble by Jahmyr Gibbs at the Lions twenty four yard line, which helped them tie it twenty four twenty four and they end up losing. The comeback mirrored that of the Lions win over the forty Niners and the nineteen fifty seven playoffs the year before Bobby Layne gets traded, where they coincidentally overcame a twenty four seven deficit to beat the forty Niners. Of course, this all works, so they have been going through it. And I’m not saying it’s all Bobby Layne’s fault, but I’m saying there have been literally thousands of other people who have been traded and were not happy about it and have not cursed the teams, and Bobby Layne chose to put it on the lions. Wolf. Uh, a lot to unpack here, obviously from Ohio, Ohio State fan. I do not hold any animosity to the Detroit Lions. If there is one singular team that I root for every Thanksgiving, Trevor, it is the Detroit Lions and their throwback uniforms. I remember Barry Sanders Juking people. Really interesting, uh, documentary on Amazon Prime with Barry Sanders. And, you know, they had some really good teams with him, but it just got to the point where he was like, I’m out. I just don’t want to do this anymore. It wasn’t that, you know, his body was failing him or anything like that. He just he went out on top and that was that. There was just a new regime at that point, and he didn’t want to be a part of it. Trevor, I am a okay. If the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions meet in the Super Bowl someday. and one of our curses is lifted. Something’s happened. Something’s bound to happen. I hope so, too. Uh, I’m gonna leave you with this. In the twenty four twenty five season, the Lions got out to their best start with a twelve and two start. Uh, and then their team gets decimated by injuries. They lose twenty two players. And guess what? That was Bobby Lane’s jersey number. Okay. All right. That’s my last one. I had to get them all in. Oh that’s it. Uh, shout out to Bobby Lane. Um, newsflash, the curse is over, Bobby. So we should be done here. Um, and shout out to the lions who have experienced historic misery. Like I said, worst winning percentage over that time. Uh, the only team to go zero and sixteen. And, uh, yeah, we, I’m sure that we will have another segment on the more modern take on the lions. We can maybe talk to somebody who has followed them for their whole life. But that is the Detroit Lions and the Bobby Layne curse. Well, thank you so much, Trevor.
