The Misery Sports Index is Misery Sports Co.’s proprietary ranking system measuring franchise disappointment, dysfunction, heartbreak, and historical underperformance across sports. Using a highly questionable but deeply committed evaluation process, we analyze the emotional losses, organizational failures, and recurring disappointments that define the world’s most miserable sports investments.
How the Misery Sports Index Works
Teams are rated 0-100 with the highest ratings reflecting the most miserable franchises.
Championship Drought (0-25 points)
Measures how long a franchise has gone without a championship, including extended periods of postseason failure, missed opportunities, and generations of fans waiting for another title.
Historic Collapses (0-25 points)
Evaluates the most painful moments in franchise history, including blown leads, failed championship runs, infamous losses, and seasons that ended in unforgettable disappointment.
Organizational Dysfunction (0-20 points)
Accounts for ownership issues, front office instability, coaching turnover, poor decision-making, and recurring problems that prevent sustained success.
Fan Suffering (0-20 points)
Measures the emotional toll placed on supporters, including prolonged losing, unrealistic expectations, loyalty through hardship, and the cultural impact of repeated disappointment.
Current Performance Adjustment (0-10 points)
Provides a present-day modifier based on recent seasons, allowing the index to account for franchises currently experiencing a period of decline or resurgence (more points for decline).
